Week 8. Montante. Ch. 13. Putting it Altogether

Week 8. Montante. Ch. 13. Putting it all together. “You have the power to choose to live your life in ways that reflect a set of values and expectations and that carry consequences for yourself and for the communities you live in.” Chapter 8 reflects how everything about lifespan development is about us. Every theory that we have read about or had strong opinions about cannot always explain all the aspect of development, but they do give the ideas that give us our own opinions about them and how we each view them in different viewpoints. This course has helped me learn so much about the development of a human life. From conception all the way to old age. It has helped me notice more about everyone’s own personal development. We all do it differently and have our own way of learning. Each chapter has had me open up my mind more into each type of development we see and what we may not understand about it. Public figures like the Dalai Lama have suggested that we need to open...

Week 7. Montante. Ch. 12 Dying & Spirituality

Week 7. Montante. Ch. 12 Dying & Spirituality   The role of death is something that we will eventually have to face in one way or another. The average life expectancy has been reported at and all time high of nearly 78 years. There are four types of death that this chapter has mentioned. Clinical Death: This is when your respiration and heartbeat have stopped. It is the least useful to the medical profession because it is unreliable. Fortunately, since the practice of CPR many individuals have been saved. This section brought up something that connected with me because at almost every job I have had we would always have to be CPR certified. I think it is important for everyone young and older adults/students should know the basics of CPR and its importance. This section also suggested that due too several recent studies pushing to the beat of the Bee gee’s song “Staying Alive” gives the approximate number of compressions/minute (Harman, 2008 page 281). This made me...

Week 6. Montante. Ch. 9 & 10 Early & Middle Adulthood

Week 6. Montante. Ch. 9 and 10 Early & Middle Adulthood In Chapter 9 we explore early adulthood which is approximately 18 to 25. Some of the highlights in this chapter would be the physical development. In this life period physical changes slow down a lot and young adult are in peak condition. We realize that the lifestyle that we engage in play a big role in our health. The nutrition that we feed into our body are an important part for our development as in it influences heart disease and cancer which is two major health concerns. Even though we may think we are “fit” our nutrition intake tend to be unhealthy. The book gave an example such as the documented film Super Size Me. I personally remember watching that movie and not quite understanding much of it. At that time I was young and McDonalds was not something I ate as I grew older. Personally as I got older I decided to cut out soda to live a healthier lifestyle. It has been almost 8 years since I have not had a full c...

Week 5. Montante. Ch. 8. Adolescence

Week 5. Montante. Ch8. Adolescence               Adolescence is the process of developing from a child into an adult. The age ranges from 13 and 19, but the physical and psychological changes that happen can start earlier during their preteen years. Everyone’s adolescence start is different. Girls might consider it starting when they get their first period, boys say it starts when facial hair begins to grow. Hormonal balance is one of the triggers of puberty, but it is hard to pinpoint the start of it. One part that stood out to me, since I am a girl, is a girl’s first menstruation. I remember getting mine back in 5 th grade, but I never feel like I am transiting into a ‘young adult’. For me begin Mexican, I felt transiting into a young adult when I had my sweet 15. This section mentioned “when does adolescence start” and for me it was my sweet 15, rather than having my firs...

Week 4. Montante. Ch. 6 & 7. Early & Middle Childhood

Week 4. Montante. Ch. 6 & 7. Early & Middle Childhood           Chapter 6 leads into physical and motor development. It explains how boys and girls show about the same rate of growth during these years, but it all differs from child to child. Early childhood are between the ages of 2-6. Growth in early childhood continues at a slower pace than in infancy. Which I see true as each month leading to the first year a baby learns a new skill and each month is something new. In early childhood it is not the same. Yes they will learn something new every day, but it is not tracked month by month. During this stage they grow 12 inches and at least 5 pounds per year. Some of the highlights from this chapter would be the brain development. As their brain is developing they understand new things. They are visible to so many amounts of information that it is astounding to even believe.     They grow motor skills that are...

Week 3. Montante. Ch. 3, 4, and 5 Lifespan

Week 3. Montante. Ch. 3, 4, and 5 Lifespan   In chapter 3, we are focusing on fertilization occur, the stages of the parental period, the types of test and precautions. Once we see a baby automatically we see tiny toes and chubby cheeks. However, what we do not see is how exactly mom and dad came out to make this beautiful creation. Of course we know how it happen, but what is amazing is the biology behind it. We first are introduced with chromosomes, DNA, and genes. Each three of these play a very significant role in making a human life. Chromosomes are a strand of DNA that is encrypted with genes. Most of the cells have 22 pairs and also the two sex chromosomes (XX females & XY males) which brings out our total of 46. Then we have our DNA which contains our genetic information. Genes are a piece of heredity that is transferred from a parent to their child and that is held on to define some characteristics of the child. Alternatively, hereditary abnormalities ca...

Week 2.Montante. Theories of Development

Week 2. Theories of Development: Interpreting the Lifespan         In this chapter we are introduced to a couple of theorist Freud, Erikson, Piaget, Vygotsky, Skinner, Pavlov, Bandura, and Maslow. Each of them had their own idea of their interpreting the lifespan. Theories are important for constructing meaning out of facts.       F reud was presented first in the chapter. Through his work, he is the most known by his work. He came to believe that childhood experiences and unconscious desires influenced behavior. In Figure 2.1 on page 30, are Fredian stages of development. Each one has a specific age range. They are categorized as oral, anal, phallic, latency, and genital. He then argues that at different stages of a person's development personality is influenced by three distinct structures of the mind: the id, the ego, and the superego.       Next is Erikson. He developed a psychosocia...
